The Experience

Holidaymakers are invited to discover the sights of Iceland with this 4- or 9-night tour. During 4-night tour visitors will get the chance to see Seljalandsfoss waterfall – the only one of its kind in Iceland where travellers can walk behind the cascade on a footpath or the hidden waterfall in the canyon, known as Gljúfrabúi, located near Seljalandsfoss. Then guests will drive to Skaftafell, part of Vatnajökull National Park and home of the spectacular Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. The travellers will also visit the great Geysir area and explore the bubbling mud pots and spouting Strokkur geyser before arriving at the picture perfect two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall. The 9-night tour also includes visiting volcanic beaches, icebergs or fjords, tranquil fishing villages, rugged tundra along East Iceland. Holidaymakers will also get the chance to experience the unique Snæfellsjökull National Park, with amazing birdlife, lush valleys and lava fields. 4-Night Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Iceland

On arrival at Keflavik Airport, customers will be greeted by a professional driver and transferred to their accommodation in Reykjavík. After settling in, take the opportunity to explore the vibrant city centre at their own pace. The main downtown area offers a variety of shops, museums and galleries – all within an easy walk. Laugavegur, Reykjavík’s main street, offers an abundance of excellent restaurants and cafés, as well as bars and clubs for those who want to experience the renowned Reykjavík nightlife.

Spend the night in Reykjavik.

Day 2: South Coast and majestic waterfalls

Start the day by picking up the rental car before taking in some of the best-known attractions in the south of Iceland. The first leg of the journey is along the south coast, with a stop at the fairytale-like Seljalandsfoss waterfall – the only one of its kind in Iceland where travellers can walk behind the cascade on a footpath!* For those who are more adventurous, we recommend stopping by the hidden waterfall in the canyon, known as Gljúfrabúi, located near Seljalandsfoss. Further along, guests can visit the magnificent 60-metre free-falling Skógafoss waterfalls in Skógar. From there, the journey takes customers past the beautiful Eyjafjöll mountain range.

Day 3: Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon

Start the day bright and early as visitors have a full day of exciting highlights ahead of them. Drive to Skaftafell, part of Vatnajökull National Park and home of the spectacular Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon where they can take a boat ride among the floating icebergs, which vary in colour, size and density. Marvel at the region’s unique beauty by exploring the many interesting hiking trails, including a short journey to the splendid Svartifoss waterfall. In this area, holidaymakers can also embark on a glacier walk or try their hand at ice-climbing with an optional guided tour.* Travel back to the accommodation along the South Coast for the evening.

Day 4: Golden Circle: hot springs, nature and history

Drive the famous Golden Circle, a popular route for viewing some of the best-known natural sites in Iceland, before heading back to Reykjavik. Visit the great Geysir area and explore the bubbling mud pots and spouting Strokkur geyser before arriving at the picture perfect two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall. After, travellers could choose to visit the old bishopry at Skálholt and the explosion crater Kerið, now partially filled with bright blue water. Complete the circle at Þingvellir National Park, which was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site for being historically significant to the founding of Icelandic democracy and a place of immense natural beauty. Drive the Mosfellsdalur valley towards Reykjavik where customers can relax after the scenic journey along the south coast.

Day 5: Departure from Iceland

When it’s time to depart, customers will be picked up from their Reykjavík accommodation for the airport transfer. If they’re flying in the afternoon, they have the option of visiting the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa to relax in the warm mineral waters before continuing to Keflavík International Airport (Blue Lagoon entrance not included in the package).

9-Night Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Reykjavík

On arrival to Keflavik Airport, visitors will be greeted by a driver who will take them to their accommodation in Reykjavík. After settling in, the rest of the day is free for customers to explore the vibrant city centre with its abundance of museums, restaurants and bars to suit all tastes. If guests are interested in checking out Icelandic design or experiencing the city’s thriving coffee culture, head to the main street, Laugavegur, and enjoy its various shops and cosy cafes.

Day 2: The Golden Circle

Collect the rental car in the morning and begin the journey on the classic “Golden Circle” route, home to some of Iceland’s most popular attractions. Start with a visit to the fascinating Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, holidaymakers can walk on a path in the rift valley between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Next on the route is the Haukadalur geothermal area, where they can see Geysir—the original “geyser”—and its more active neighbour, Strokkur, which spouts water every few minutes. End the circle with visits to the majestic Gullfoss waterfall and the old implosion crater of Kerið.

Day 3: Waterfalls and volcanic beaches

Start with visits to the fairytale-like Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where customers can experience walking right behind the misty cascade, and the gorgeous 60-metre high Skógafoss waterfall just a short drive down the road. Further ahead at Vík, they can make a stop at the black volcanic beach south of the village, from where they can view the rock formations Dyrhólaey and Reynisdrangar. The last stop of the day is to the stunning Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon. Travellers also have a chance today to join an exciting guided excursion by foot or snowmobile on a glacier!

Spend the night in Kirkjubæjarklaustur/Skaftafell area.

Day 4: Glaciers and icebergs

Enjoy Skaftafell, part of the immense Vatnajökull National Park and a place of great natural beauty with many interesting hiking trails, including a short path to the beautiful Svartifoss waterfall. This area is also full of opportunities for more adventurous pursuits, such as guided glacier-walking or ice-climbing excursions. Then, head to the amazing Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where customers can join a boat ride among the maze of floating icebergs (optional).

Spend the night in the Höfn or Djúpivogur area.

Day 5: Fjords and fishing villages

The drive along East Iceland today is characterised by spectacular fjords, tranquil fishing villages, rugged tundra and sweeping landscapes. On arrival to the otherworldly Lake Mývatn, visitors have an abundance of unusual natural wonders to explore, including the Krafla volcano, the curiously-coloured Námaskarð pass, the massive crater of Hverfell and the lunar-like pseudo-craters at Skútustaðir.

Day 6: Lunar landscapes of Lake Mývatn

Use this day to further explore the surroundings of Lake Mývatn. Guests can start the day with an optional whale-watching trip from the village of Húsavík, “The Whale Watching Capital of Europe”. Then, drive through Jökulsárgljúfur—part of Vatnajökull National Park, visiting such sights as the hoof-shaped Ásbyrgi canyon and the most powerful waterfall in Europe, Dettifoss. End the day by bathing in the relaxing geothermal waters of the Mývatn Nature Baths, where holidaymakers can experience the glow of the midnight sun.

Spend the night in the Lake Mývatn area.

Day 7: Explore north Iceland

Spend the first half of the day around Lake Mývatn. We recommend a visit to Goðafoss (“The Waterfall of the Gods”) on the way to the charming town of Akureyri, where Customers will find interesting shops and museums as well as the world’s most northerly botanical garden.

After the break in Akureyri, travellers can either head straight to Skagafjörður or take a detour on the way there to Tröllaskagi (“The Peninsula of the Trolls”), where they can enjoy fantastic scenery of beautiful mountains, cliffs and fjords. Then, continue through Siglufjörður, which was once the centre of Iceland’s herring fleet, and make a stop at Hofsós to relax in the thermal pool (optional) before arriving at Skagafjörður, an area known for its abundance of purebred Icelandic horses.

Day 8: Journey to Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Head to Snæfellsnes Peninsula today. On the way, visitors will see the countless mounds of Vatnsdalshólar and the beautiful Þingeyrarkirkja church. They may also wish to make stops to the living museum at Eiríksstaðir, home of famous Viking Erik the Red, and the hot geothermal pool of Guðrúnarlaug. Or pay a visit to Stykkishólmur, a picture-perfect fishing village overlooking Breiðafjörður Bay. Here, customers can take a walk up to the small hill overlooking the harbour, Súgandisey, for a wonderful panoramic view over the town, sea and surrounding mountains.

Day 9: Snæfellsjökull National Park and Snæfellsjökull Glacier

Experience the unique Snæfellsjökull National Park, with amazing birdlife, lush valleys and lava fields. It is ideal to drive around the peninsula, exploring Dritvík Cove, Lóndrangar Cliffs as well as Hellnar and Arnarstapi Cliffs with its bursting bird-life and the small villages on the coast. Holidaymakers might wish to test their strength at the stones of the black volcanic beach of Djúpalónssandur like the seamen in past times. On Snæfellsnes, travellers can choose from a variety of activities such as horse riding, hiking, taking a boat-cruise (in summer) or simply relax and take in the glacier’s alleged supernatural energy.

Day 10: Departure
