Emirates OnAir Wifi

Emirates OnAir Wifi

Can you believe it? WiFi internet at 40,000 feet, onboard an Emirates flight between Dubai and England.

Emirates offer 10MB of data for free or you can pay $1 ( 0.80 GBP ) for 500MB. An amazingly priced deal which is cheaper than mobile data on the ground!

You do need a little patience because the signal comes and goes and overall it's a pretty slow experience. But being able to chat with friends and family and read the news and browse forums is pretty awesome and makes longer flights a bit more tolerable.

I love that we've gone from 'Please turn all electronic devices off' to 'We have onboard wifi!'. Congrats to Emirates 🙂

I believe some other airlines also offer OnAir WiFi but Emirates was the first airline I tried it with.

$1 for 500mb isn’t that bad at all!

You’ll struggle to use all that data because it’s not very stable. But I’m still amazed at having any kind of internet connection on a plane and very very happy with the pricing.

I think the speed is decent if you consider the possibility that a lot of people on the plane are using it.

      January 20, 2017 at 5:40 am

You can actually see how many people are connected and it averaged 30-50 which seemed pretty low but they must be active. Because if you put your phone to sleep, you get disconnected pretty quickly and have to sign in again.

Good idea! Although to be honest, I think $1 per device is very fair so I’d probably just pay the extra $1.

It’s crazy that we are sitting on a pressurized Metal can at 40,000 feet and can actually eat, sleep and can use the bathroom.Yet,people are still complaining about no Wi-Fi.People need to be grateful lol

lol I prefer not to think about the magic required to make a plane fly. Yes there’s science but there’s also some wizard magic mixed in. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone complaining there’s no WIFI on a plane. Everyone I told about this was absolutely amazed that it exists, including me 😀

ltt made a tech quicky episode on this and it was really cool watching this makes me question the “why is plane wifi so slow” title. since it dosn’t seem like its that bad (based on your video that is)

I just checked out his video now. Kinda interesting I guess. But personally I’m amazed to get any kind of useful internet connection on a plane.

Gadget Addict yeah it really is amazing … im not absolutely sure since i have no practical experience and am basing it completely on what my COM/NAV instructor told me. but it operates under the same principal as ACARS only instead of a receiver on ground and a transmitter on the plane there is a transceiver on both and processing is split between them … the biggest limitation i think is that you only have one antenna for it and chances are its not even dedicated for just wifi

PAL also has OnAir and they charge by time. I remember it was $5 for 15 minutes. What a ripoff!

    • Gadget Addict

      June 2, 2017 at 3:27 pm

Yikes, way too expensive! Personally I don’t like the direction PAL is going. They kinda steamed ahead making a name for themselves as a premium / semi-premium airline and then threw it all away by ramping up prices and reducing quality.

How can you pay for the 500mb? Only by credit card or is PayPal also accepted?

    • Gadget Addict

if this wifi will still connected if you are not in economy class? because 2yrs ago iwas a emirates plane but the wifi is open but not working pls answer?!!!!

    • Gadget Addict

      June 24, 2017 at 12:35 am

+sak Gi it’s throughout the plane, regardless of class. If the wifi isn’t working you need to tell the flight staff so they can fix it.

Thanks for the great video, i will be flying on emirates soon. is it always $1 for 500mb or was this only a limited time offer? also what do you need to purchase it?

    • Gadget Addict

      August 5, 2017 at 9:38 am

As far as I know, that’s the normal price, it’s not a promo or limited time thing. You just need a Visa/Mastercard 🙂

Hi, I heard that you can only pay by credit/debit card, so no cash allowed right? I also heard that you get 20Mb for free, but how long does it last? cos on their website they said “within the first two hours of the flight”…

    • Gadget Addict

      August 8, 2017 at 5:20 am

+Othman Chaouki correct you need a credit or debit card. No cash payments. You will consume the free 20MB very quickly, it’s not a lot of data.

Hi, do you remember the URL address to put on Safari to access the on air wi fi? As my past two flights with Emirates I had some difficulties in connecting to the both the paid and free wi fi service (my phone would connect via the wi fi settings but nothing else would happen)
